The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
